Keeping configuration in version control

Monday, 28 September 2026

The server used to be a pile of changes I made at two in the morning and forgot by breakfast. Rebuilding it after a disk failure meant remembering all of them, which I could not.

Now every config file lives in a git repository, and a rebuild is a checkout and a script. The server is close to disposable, which is exactly how I want it.

The side benefit is a history: when something breaks, the last change is one command away, and reverting it is another.
